— A woman whose body was found burning in the woods Thursday afternoon in Eastover died of a gunshot wound and was pregnant, according to the Richland County coroner.

Firefighters were called to the 3200 block of Screaming Eagle Road Extension, near Fort Jackson, at about 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Crews discovered the woman’s body ablaze in the woods.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was 21 weeks pregnant when she was shot and killed, said Richland County coroner Gary Watts. She was set on fire after she was killed.

Initially, officials were unable to determine the body’s gender because it was so badly burned, Watts said.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. Officers are canvassing the area, running down leads and working with forensic investigators at the scene, department spokesman Curtis Wilson said Friday.

The coroner’s office needs help identifying the woman. She is described as black, about 5-feet-8-inches tall and weighing between 120-135 pounds. Call the coroner’s office at (803) 576-1799.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (888) CRIME-SC.
