2 early morning car accidents leave 1 man dead

— One man died after a single-car accident early Saturday morning, and another early-morning car accident caused power outages and a gas leak.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said one man died after a wreck in the 11000 block of Farrow Road at about 4 a.m. when a vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck a utility pole and then a tree.

Jacob Henry Woo, 27, 216 Cambridge Lane, Columbia, was the driver and only occupant, Watts said. Woo, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from trauma, Watts said. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.

On the other side of town, a car that was traveling south on Beltline Boulevard near Rosewood Drive struck the median and left the roadway shortly before 5 a.m.

The vehicle then struck a power line cable and a gas line, causing power outages and gas leak, according to Jennifer Timmons, spokeswoman for the Columbia Police Department. The roads were closed for a time while repairs were made.

German Figueroa, 47, was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving with a suspended license and operating an uninsured vehicle, Timmons said.
