Preview: Brookland-Cayce baseball

Published: March 5, 2013

Brookland-Cayce baseball heads in another new direction this spring, but the name of the man in charge is a familiar one.

Charles Assey, a former B-C player and the sox of former long-time coach Charlie Assey, takes over a program that finished 12-14 in one season under Bo Bowers and reached the district finals round in the playoffs.

“We have some talent,” said Assey. “I think we will score some runs and be OK offensively, but we have to pitch and make the routine plays consistently to compete.”

Seniors DeAndre Asbury-Heath (P/OF), Austin Hoard (P/Utility), Drew Towery (P) and Daniel Branham (P/Utility) are the returning starters. Newcomers to watch include senior B.J. DeWalt (OF) and juniors, Trey Foster (1B), Grant Petrey (3B) and Jordan Henderson (OF).

The Bearcats home opener is Friday against Berkeley.

Assey was the head coach at Woodland last season, taking over to Rusty Charpia who is now B-C’s athletic director and head football coach.
