Preview: Brookland-Cayce softball

March 5, 2013

Brookland-Cayce softball enters the 2013 season minus a familiar face – Chandler Terrapin, a six-year varsity star. As a result, the Bearcats might have trouble living up to the traditional high standards of the program.

Second-year coach Kurtis Fields welcomes back six starters, but the big question will be how well sophomores Whitney Jacobs and Victoria Baswell do in the circle in place of the departed Terrapin.

“(Jacobs and Baswell) are working hard, but must mature and season quickly,” said Fields. “The defense and the bats will be needed to offset this learning curve.”

Jacobs will play at third base or shortstop when not hurling, while Baswell will be the starter at first base.

Freshman catcher Hanna Sharpe, sophomore outfielders Hannah Porter and Caroline Heaton and junior outfielder Amanda Corley LF round out the veteran cast.

Juniors Jasmine Glover (SS/3B) and Katie Goodale (3B/C) and sophomores Breanna Bush (3B/2B) and Jordan Whitney (2B/OF) are newcomers to watch.

The Bearcats, who finished below .500 (12-15) for the first time in recent memory but went 8-4 in Region 5-3A a year ago, opens the season tonight (Tuesday) against Dreher at home. B-C’s region opener is Thursday at Midland Valley.
