Preview: Swansea softball

Swansea is moving back up the Class 3A this spring with five returning starters off a solid, 16-8 team last season that made it to the district finals before being eliminated from the state playoffs.

“We are moving into a very challenging region with Airport, Brookland-Cayce, Gilbert, Midland Valley, and Strom Thurmond, but we feel like we will be competitive and have an opportunity to qualify for the playoffs,” said Tigers coach Marty Mack, who is 161-111 in 12 seasons at Swansea.

Senior ptcher Miranda Rogers, senior catcher Brittany Nelums, senior outfielder Amber Alexander, junior third baseman Cara Lucas and sophomore center fielder Morgan Strickland provide the veteran base of the team.

Junior outfielder Elen Ashley, sophomore shortstop Brenna Regalis and sophomore first baseman Ki’Ana Speights are newcomers to watch.

The Tigers got off to a good start with wins over Irmo and Pelion in the first week of the regular season.
