Driver dies in fiery SC 277 crash

— A car burst into flames in a deadly crash on SC 277 Tuesday morning, according to a spokeswoman with the Columbia Police Department.

The car was headed into Columbia on the highway near Bull Street when the driver lost control of the vehicle and the car crashed into a guardrail, department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Police and civilians tried to pull the person from the vehicle but were unsuccessful and the driver died at the scene, Timmons said. The identity and gender of the driver are unavailable at this time.

Traffic in the northbound lanes of the highway is unaffected, Timmons said. Drivers headed south on the road were asked to detour to Sunset Drive, but all lanes into the city were reopened about 1 p.m.

Police and workers with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department are both at the scene.
