Red Flag Alert lifted for SC; more than 130 fires over weekend

March 18, 2013

— The statewide Red Flag Alert is now lifted because of improved weather conditions.

Rain, higher humidity, decreased winds and cooler temperatures have reduced fire risks, the S.C. Forestry Commission announced Monday.

But there is still a burning ban in effect in Horry County, prompted in part by a major fire at Windsor Green condominiums the the Carolina Forest community along the coast.

Gov. Nikki Haley and state and local emergency preparedness officials on Monday afternoon planned to brief reporters on the Carolina Forest fire. The fire destroyed two dozen buildings in the condominium development Saturday night.

The forestry commission continues to investigate the cause of the fire, which destroyed more than 100 units. Officials say some of the condos were used as vacation homes and were not occupied.

There were more than 130 fires statewide over the weekend, according to preliminary figures from the Forestry Commission, including at least eight in Richland and Lexington counties.
