COLUMBIA, SC — A man arrested Tuesday after a Garrners Ferry Road jewelry store heist is wanted for murder in Atlanta, according to a Columbia Police Department spokeswoman.
Armond Gibson, 23, was arrested Wednesday in connection with a robbery at Mim’s Jewelry on Garners Ferry Road and an ensuing police chase in morning traffic. He is charged with two counts of armed robbery, four counts of kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Gibson is one of two masked men accused of going into the store armed and ordering everyone inside to the floor before smashing a glass case and stealing jewelry, said Jennifer Timmons, the Columbia Police Department spokeswoman.
After the robbery, the two men left the store in a getaway car. A bystander saw them leaving and pursued the car before police picked up the chase. Police pursued the car until it crashed into a fence at a community of townhomes on Pennington Road. The two suspects then ran from police on foot, Timmons said..
Gibson was arrested a short time after the crash after an officer found him running near the I-77 overpass on Garners Ferry Road. He’s being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center without bond.
The second suspect is still at large. If you know anything about the suspect or his whereabouts, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or www.sccrimestoppers.com.
