BISHOPVILLE, SC — A police officer in Bishopville drove himself to the hospital after being attacked by a dog Tuesday night.
Master Patrolman Josh Kelly was attacked by the dog while on a foot patrol on Main Street in Bishopville Tuesday evening, said Bishopville Police Chief Sonny Ledda.
Kelly was bitten in the upper leg, but was able to get away from the dog thanks to military training, Ledda said. He then gave himself first aid and drove himself to a hospital in Hartsville.
Once there, doctors decided that Kelly needed to be airlifted to a trauma ward and the man was taken to Palmetto Health Richland, Ledda said.
Kelly went into surgery at the hospital, and is still there for observation.
He was in pretty good spirits considering what happened to him, Ledda said.
The department hasnt been able to find the dog and Kelly wasnt able to get a good description of the animal, Ledda said.
