Five more face charges in Midlands sports gambling ring; 17 arrested so far

Published: March 22, 2013

— The Richland County Sheriff’s Department has arrested five more people in connection with a suspected sports gambling ring in the Midlands that came to light during the investigation of a double murder in Irmo last year.

The arrest of Gregory McCoy, 42, Ben Yon, 33, Nathan Chisom, 36, Damon K Johnson, 33, and Edward Maracich, 50, brings to 17 the number of suspects charged with misdemeanor gambling for allegedly placing bets with a sports book operated by Brett Parker, 42, of Irmo.

Parker is expected to stand trial in May on two counts of murder following the shooting deaths of his wife, Tammy, and family friend Bryan Capnerhurst at his Irmo home last spring. He also faces a federal charge of operating an illegal gamling business.
