Columbia police officers, others to get a close shave today – for a good cause

March 23, 2013

— Officers with the Columbia Police Department will be out in numbers today but not just fighting crime – they’ll be getting haircuts as well. Extremely short haircuts.

The close shaves are all part of the fun at the annual St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event at Jillian’s in the Vista.

The event starts at 1 p.m. today and aims to raise money for children with cancer. Both participants and spectators can get in on the fun by making donations in person.

Several officers with the department already have raised close to $900 for the event, department spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Timmons said Saturday. The officers are expected to go under the clippers beginning at 1:45 p.m.

The Midlands event, now in its seventh year, raises funds as part of an international effort that touts itself as the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program. Money raised benefits South Carolina hospitals such as Palmetto Children’s Hospital and MUSC.
