State photographers take top SCNPA awards

From Staff ReportsMarch 24, 2013

The State newspaper photography staff took top honors at the annual South Carolina News Photographers Association Pictures of the Year competition, held at The Westin Poinsett in Greenville Friday and Saturday.

SCNPA is one of the oldest state newspaper photography organizations. The photography staff captured more awards than any newspaper in South Carolina during a full day of judging Saturday.

The State’s C. Aluka Berry was named Photographer of the Year. This is the fourth time Berry has won the honor. The State’s Gerry Melendez was runner-up.

“Chris Berry’s portfolio had strong visual storytelling,” said judge Mic Smith.

“You get a sense the photographer isn’t afraid to get close and talk to people,” added judge Mark Adams.

Best in Show went to Berry for his feature story on recovering addicts in Ridge Spring.

The State took top honors in multiple categories. C. Aluka Berry swept the feature category and took first place in spot news and feature picture story. Gerry Melendez took first place in sports action, news picture story and sports picture story. Jeff Blake took first in pictorial, and C. Michael Bergen took first in sports feature.
