— A driver lost control of his car and smashed into a tree, killing the passenger, in an Sunday predawn crash, according to a preliminary investigation by the Columbia Police Department.

The driver was taken to a local hospital and was in critical but stable condition Sunday, said Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons.

The vehicle was traveling south when the driver lost control, crossed into the northbound lane and left the road, striking a tree on the passenger side of the vehicle, Timmons said.

The incident happened around 5:15 a.m. in the 1000 block of Veterans Road, in a residential neighborhood about a mile south of the Dorn VA Medical Center. At the time, a heavy rain was falling in the Columbia area.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Sunday he would release information about the identity of the person killed at a later time.

Columbia police and fire units worked the incident. It is still under investigation by the Columbia Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.
