Richland County, SC — Warren Bolton’s Feb. 10 column, “Imagine this,” waxes euphoric about Richland County government receiving $1 billion from the transportation sales tax. Such euphoria might be understandable if this money were falling from heaven and all we needed were buckets in which to catch it.
But this is real money being taken out of the real economy, where it could have otherwise been invested in productive pursuits that provide real employment and create real economic expansion. We will pay a huge opportunity cost for taking this $1 billion out of the real economy and giving it to the spectacularly incompetent and corrupt Richland County government.
But Mr. Bolton says this tax will actually grow and expand our economy in ways that allowing folks to spend their own money would never do. If that is so, why don’t we increase the tax from $1 billion to $2 billion, or even $4 billion, so this huge economic benefit can be multiplied?
Why don’t we just send all our money to Richland County government so we can all be millionaires?
