Driver dies when flames consume truck after crash in Northeast Richland

Columbia - The StateMarch 27, 2013

— A man died early Wednesday when his truck ran off the road on Rice Meadow Way, near Hardscrabble Road, and hit a tree.

The driver was apparently killed when the truck’s engine overheated causing a flash-fire in the vehicle, Richland County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Curtis Wilson said.

The accident was discovered after someone called the fire in to emergency services after 3 a.m., Wilson said.

“We don’t know yet why the driver stayed in the truck after he ran off the road,” Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

The coroner’s office is working with medical records to confirm the victim’s identity.
