Carolina Cup in Camden adding more officers

March 30, 2013

— Authorities are bringing in 135 officers to help patrol the Carolina Cup horse races in Camden.

Camden Police Chief Joe Floyd says he will assign the most officers Saturday to the College Park section, where college students gather. Many of the officers will be specially trained to deal with college students and alcohol violations.

Last year, authorities arrested 225 people at the Carolina Cup, with most of the arrests occurring in College Park.

Camden has set aside $25,000 to pay for overtime for the extra officers, who are coming from 17 agencies across the state. Kershaw County deputies won’t be inside the cup, but Sheriff Jim Matthews says they will be outside, looking for drunken drivers.
