Columbia, SC — The idea about forming a new county out of parts of Lexington and Richland counties appears to be a clumsy way to express concerns about the taxes in those counties. Anyone who thinks forming another county will reduce taxes should think again.
As part of a viable community, we have to pay for the services we get. How simple is that?
If county residents do not want an increase in the sales tax in Lexington County, they likely will have a chance to vote in 2014. The residents in Richland County already had that chance and voted “yes.” The choices rest with the voters; after all, this is a democracy, and sometimes you will disagree with the majority. That is the way the system works.
