Roundup: Socastee girls edge Georgetown in high-scoring softball affair

From staff reportsApril 2, 2013

— The Braves softball team got a big region win over Georgetown, scoring six runs in the seventh inning with two outs on the board to get the win 13-12.

Kabibi Thorsen, who pitched a complete game to get her fourth win of the year, also proved effective at the plate batting 1-for-4 and driving in the winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“Amazing game. It was a region game so obviously it was very important,” Socastee coach Steve Hodge said. “With them at 3-3 in region play and us at 4-2 in the second half of our region schedule, I’d say it was pretty important.”

Both squads stayed even for much of the game, but the seventh inning proved to be the Bulldogs’ undoing.

Quin Gammon was perfect at the plate, hitting 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs, and a home run for Socastee. Taylor Fitzmaurice went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, Blake Smith went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and two runs, and Mallorie Roesing rounded out an amped-up Braves offense with a double and a run scored.

“They just never gave up,” Hodge said. “They just kept at it. They didn’t give up. They hit a lot of hard shots early in the game and they didn’t fall. Big win for us.”
