Traffic on Assembly Street blocked near Carolina Coliseum after ‘suspicious liquid’ found

April 5, 2013

— Traffic on Assembly Street was disrupted about an hour and a half Friday evening after a hotel near the Carolina Coliseum reported a ‘suspicious liquid’ in a container in its parking garage.

A hazmat unit with the Columbia-Richland Fire Department investigated. “We tested it and determined that it didn’t pose a risk to anyone,” Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said.

Northbound traffic on Assembly Street, between Blossom Street and Green Street was blocked in front of the Courtyard Marriott.

Jenkins said the container was turned over to the Columbia Police Department. Surveillance cameras on the second floor of the hotel’s parking garage may help identify who left it there.
