Columbia police officer faces DUI charge

Columbia - The StateApril 7, 2013 

A Columbia police officer was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with DUI, according to the SC Highway Patrol.

Patrol spokesman Brent Kelly said CPD officer Michael Watson, 34, was sleeping at the wheel when first discovered by city police around 2 a.m.

Watson's car was discovered stopped at a traffic light on Garners Ferry Road near Leesburg Road. 

City officers notified the Highway Patrol. The patrol came to the scene, got Watson out of his car and placed him under arrest. Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said Watson was off duty in his personal vehicle at the time of his arrest.

Timmons said Watson has been suspended without pay pending investigation.
