Myrtle Beach boys soccer holds on to No. 1 state ranking

April 8, 2013

The Myrtle Beach boys soccer team held on to its Class AAA No. 1 ranking, released late Sunday evening.

The Seahawks went 2-1 in the prestigious Nike Palmetto Cup outside Columbia last week, including a victory over Lexington, one of the top-ranked teams in Class AAAA. Lexington handed Myrtle Beach its first loss of the year in March during another tournament. The defeat in the Palmetto Cup came against Farragut (Tenn.), a team ranked No. 2 in the nation by MaxPreps and No. 20 in the country by Elite Soccer Report, the same site that currently has the Seahawks No. 40 in the country.

Myrtle Beach (10-2 overall) will have a key game against St. James (8-3, No. 11 Class AAA) Tuesday night. The Sharks were originally set to be the home team; however, field renovations at St. James forced a move to Myrtle Beach.

Like the Seahawks and Sharks, Socastee (9-2) is also ranked in the state poll. The Braves are currently No. 4 after holding the top spot earlier in the year.

Waccamaw (7-3-2) is the only other area boys program appearing in the state rankings. The Warriors are currently No. 4 in Class AA.

Area girls teams Waccamaw (No. 3, Class AA/A) and Myrtle Beach (No. 11 in Class AAA) are also still appearing in the most-recent rankings.
