Columbia, SC — The corporations referred to in the April 3 article, “Garbage war intensifies in S.C. as corporations turn up the heat,” spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy our politicians’ favor, so they can bring in out-of-state garbage to sites such as the landfill in Lee County.
These mega dumps, which receive garbage from as far away as New York, are polluting our air, our ground water and the beauty of our state. I play golf next to the Lee County dump, and it is unsightly and very smelly. We refer to it as “Stinky Mountain.”
We were at one time the dump for atomic waste from around the country, and now we are the garbage dump for these corporations for huge profits. These companies know our history — that we can be bought. Why else would our state not develop laws against bringing in out-of-state garbage?
I urge everyone in the state to email or write their elected leaders and let them know your feelings on this issue. Let them know we do not want them to sell our beautiful state to the highest bidder.
I am very upset with the politicians of our state. We are also at fault if we do not let them know how we feel.
