Master picks for April 11

April 11, 2013

SNEDEKER’S GOT RIGHT STUFF

There’s a guy coming off an injury who stunk it up in his previous two events before the Masters. He has never won a major, and he has admitted to being on edge this week.

It certainly doesn’t sound like a winning formula, does it?

Tiger Woods is the favorite. It would be fun to see Dustin Johnson put together four good rounds and bring the green jacket home to the Beach.

But the man who will win this year is someone who is well under the radar. You might be surprised to hear he is No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, has a win on this year’s tour and three other top-three finishes.

This 32-year-old ranks 16th on the tour in driving accuracy, is the second-best at reaching greens in regulation and 10th in strokes gained on the green. He is healthy after resting a rib-cage injury and was 11-under par last year on Augusta’s par-5 holes.

Yes, this week will belong to Brandt Snedeker.

ROSE A LONG SHOT WINNER

All signs are pointing to a Tiger Woods win, which would be his 15th in a major and fifth at Augusta National.

But we’ve been here before, breathlessly proclaiming “Tiger’s Back,” and it hasn’t worked out. I know he’s won three times this year, but he won three times last year as well and it didn’t help him in the majors. My guess is won’t this year.

That’s why I’m going with England’s Justin Rose to continue a string of out-of-nowhere Augusta winners. Rose has gradually gotten better amongst the pines, from 36th to 20th to 11th to eighth in the past four years, and he’s been double digits under par in the three events this year.
