Columbia, SC — Gov. Nikki Haley can provide Medicaid for free to poor South Carolinians for three years, and for only 10 percent of the cost thereafter. All she has to do is opt in for expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
If I said I would pay for health care for your family when you couldn’t afford it, wouldn’t you say yes? Can you imagine any circumstance where you wouldn’t?
Too proud to take the money? South Carolina gets $1.35 in federal funds for every $1 it pays in taxes.
Too wealthy? Puh-leeze.
Republican? The GOP governors of Arizona, Michigan, Florida, Ohio, Nevada, North Dakota, New Jersey and New Mexico are more concerned about their constituents than any tenuous ideological objection. Haley needs to follow their lead.
People get sick whether they have medical insurance or not, and they get care. The only difference is how sick they are when they get care, and where they get it: a doctor’s office or the ER. Oh, and who pays for it.
Gov. Haley needs to do the smart and caring thing and opt in to expanded Medicaid.
