Monday’s area sports briefs

From staff reportsApril 15, 2013

Coastal Carolina’s lead in the Big South Women’s Golf Championship dwindled to one Monday, but the Chanticleers still led the team and individual standings after the second round.

Brittany Henderson (71) and Lena Schaeffner (73) were tied for the individual lead at even-par 144 and helped Coastal (8-over 296) maintain a lead over Campbell (292) at The Patriot Golf Club. The Chants’ duo were two strokes ahead of a pair of Campbell individuals.

Coastal’s Jessica Alexander (78) was tied for sixth (150), Frida Castillo (75) was tied for eighth (151) and Marissa Hinchman (77) was tied for 12th (153).

Also Monday, the Chants picked up plenty of hardware at annual awards banquet.

Henderson earned Big South Golfer of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year honors and was joined on the All-Big South team by Alexander, Hinchman and Schaeffner.

Henderson and Alexander earned their fourth consecutive all-conference honors, making the duo only the ninth and 10th Big South players and fifth and sixth Chanticleers to be four-time all-league honorees.

Schaeffner and Hinchman also earned All-Freshman Team nods by the coaches.
