Congaree National Park making canoe launch improvements

April 16, 2013

Canoeing at Congaree National Park will be more difficult in the coming months during a project aimed at making it easier in the future.

The South Cedar Creek canoe launch will be closed intermittently as crews begin a project to improve the access point. The area around the launch site has eroded through the years. An expanded parking area, new access ramp and launch is in the works.

If you plan to paddle on Cedar Creek in the park, call the park office at (803) 776-4396 to see if the launch is closed for construction. If it is closed, paddlers still can launch at the north end of the park, at the Bannister’s Bridge site. But in that case, they would have to paddle downstream and back to Bannister’s Bridge or keep going south to the Congaree River.
