SC EDUCATION LOTTERY

— An early morning phone call that woke a Jonesville woman was easily forgiven when she learned it was her husband with some news:

“I just won $1 million,” he said, according to SC Education Lottery officials.

The man had driven to Newberry County on business that morning and stopped for some soda at the Around the Clock BP on SC 34. He also decided to buy a Money Money Millionaire ticket.

After the call, the unidentified man’s wife climbed into her car and drove to Newberry to meet him.

“The whole way there I was thinking he’d better not be playing a joke on me,” she said to lottery officials. “He was so calm.”

In Newberry, the grinning man showed her the ticket. It was no joke. She held it in her hand the whole way to Columbia to claim the prize.

The couple plans to pay off their house, among first priorities.

The ticket was the third of four $1 million winners in the Money Money Millionaire game. A Travelers Rest woman and a Greer woman also have won. The odds of winning that prize are 1 in 1.5 million.

Around the Clock BP received a commission of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.
