Update: Gervais and Millwood streets back open after gas line break

kdavis@thestate.comApril 18, 2013

— A ruptured gas line owned by SCE&G forced officials to close a block of Gervais Street between Millwood and Lyon street s and evacuate businesses Thursday for part of the afternoon.

The cause of the break on Dillon Street near Millwood was not immediately available. As a precaution, businesses around the area were evacuated and the road closed to traffic, Columbia Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis said.

The intersection reopened around 1 p.m., he said.

SCE&G spokesman Robert Yanity said crews were on the scene working to repair the 2-inch line. At least three customers were affected by the cut, which he anticipated would take about an hour to repair.

A contractor broke the line while digging in the area, he said.
