GEORGETOWN A soaked field forced the Andrews baseball team to play its biggest game of the season at a neutral site.
The Yellow Jackets felt right at home at Georgetown’s Mike Johnson Park, though.
Eleon Bruce and Ethan Wright each homered and Andrews defeated Lake City 12-2 in five innings to clinch the Region VII-AA title.
“We love that park,” Andrews coach Roland Clemons quipped. “I asked [Georgetown coach Mike] Johnson if we can play the playoffs here. He said ‘sure.’ But no, we’ll play Thursday in Andrews against Loris.”
The game was originally scheduled for Friday before being washed out. Andrews had hoped to get the game in Saturday at home, but the field wasn’t ready. Nor was it Sunday.
Therefore, a game that would decide the region champ had to be played on a neighbor’s field.
“The kids came ready to play. It’s tough. They were so prepared to play on Friday. They got prepared to play on Saturday and couldn’t play on Saturday,” Clemons said. “But they kept their focus all along.”
The Yellow Jackets will enter the playoffs as a top seed, which Clemons said is a key for his team.
“It’s huge. It gave us momentum going into the playoffs,” he said. “The kids got pumped up. This is the second year in a row that we won region. Great starting point for the playoffs.”
Patrick Ward struck out nine and allowed just two unearned runs on the mound to pick up the win. He and Wright both sport ERAs under 1.00, Clemons said. “He’s been pretty much lights out,” the coach said of Ward. “Him and Ethan Wright, are our 1-2 punch.”
