Tuesday letters: Washington hits new low

April 23, 2013

— While on a trip to Las Vegas and San Diego, we took a tour of Death Valley National Park. Included in the tour’s itinerary was a stop at Badwater Basin, where the guide told us that the ocean once had covered the basin and the mountains surrounding it.

He pointed to a sign that read “Badwater Basin — 282 feet below sea level” and said, “This is the lowest place in the United States.”

A tourist in the group replied, “No sir, it isn’t.’” The guide asked, “Then where is it?” The tourist replied, “Washington, D.C.”
