'Gamblers' unit returns from deployment April 25

April 23, 2013

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - Members of the 77th Fighter Squadron, the Gambler Aircraft Maintenance Unit and the 20th Operations Support Squadron are scheduled to return from a 6-month deployment April 25, at 8 a.m., on the Shaw AFB flight line. The 77th FS was deployed as the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron flying out of Kandahar Airfield and Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where they provided close-air support for coalition forces. Anyone with base access is encouraged to attend the homecoming to welcome the "Gamblers" home. The Patriot Guard Riders will also participate in the homecoming. The F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft arrived home April 23, ahead of the main group of personnel arriving Thursday. A memorial is scheduled for April 30 at 10 a.m., in remembrance of Capt. James Steel, 77th FS pilot, who crashed returning to base after a close-air support mission on April 3, while on the same deployment.
