BOYS SOCCER

With one week of regular-season play remaining, the Irmo Yellow Jackets are winding up their final season under coach Phil Savitz. The Yellow Jackets (12-6, 8-2) won the Region 4-4A championship. When the SCHSL playoffs begin on May 7, Irmo is slated to face Region 3’s No. 4 seed — a spot Rock Hill and South Pointe are tied for — and could meet Northwestern (15-0) in the third round.

SOFTBALL

Chapin, Class 3A’s fifth-ranked squad, hosts Berea in game 1 of the District 4 tournament on Friday. The Eagles are among a handful of local teams starting their title campaigns, including Camden, which hosts Travelers Rest, and last year’s runner-up, Gilbert, which hosts Hilton Head in District 5.

In Class 4A, several of the area’s top pitchers are in action as Katie Chappell and No. 5 Blythewood open with a home game, and Savannah Terrapin leads White Knoll against Irmo.

BASEBALL

District tournaments begin Thursday, and several area teams could be considered the teams to beat in their districts. Class 4A’s No. 1 team, Lexington, hosts Lugoff-Elgin in the opening game for District 5.

No. 3 Blythewood leads the field in District 4. The Bengals host Fort Mill on Thursday at 6:30. A.C. Flora, No. 1 and the defending champion in Class 3A, has Chapman, Blue Ridge and Emerald in its path to the District 4 title.

TRACK AND FIELD

The countdown to the SCHSL and SCISA championships has begun. Several regions host their qualifying meets this week, including the Region 3-2A meet at Eau Claire and the Region 4-4A meet at Spring Valley on Thursday.

Several SCISA region meets were held this week, and on May 4, Porter-Gaud will host the league’s championship meet in Charleston.

In SCHSL competition, top performers from this week’s region meets will be in action at the May 4 qualifying meets — Class 3A at Dreher and Class 4A at Spring Valley — vying for slots in the May 10 state finals.

GIRLS SOCCER

In Class 3A, Brookland-Cayce and Swansea are tied for the Region 5-3A title, and the tie-breaking result may come down to Brookland- Cayce’s May 2 match with Chapin. The Class 3A tournament begins on May 6, and the winner of the region’s top seed likely will host Berkeley (8-7) or Hanahan (6-4) in the opening round.
