WOODRUFF — The Woodruff softball team capitalized on a handful of mental errors in the first inning and extended its season Tuesday night.
The Wolverines scored five runs in the opening frame and beat visiting A.C. Flora, 11-5, in an elimination game in the Class 3A district playoffs. Woodruff travels to Pickens for a 6:30 p.m. elimination game Wednesday.
Woodruff used three walks and two hits to jump to a 5-0 lead in the first. Ashton Osborne doubled in Paige Satterfield, and Haley Fowler drove in MiKayla Register. Osborne, Grace Downey and Fowler also scored in the inning.
“Fortunately, we were able to score some early runs, because I didn’t think we were focused towards the end of the game,” Woodruff coach Keith Workman said. “Like I told our girls, it’s the little things that extend or end your season. We need to get those little things fixed in a hurry.”
A.C. Flora scored five runs in the final three innings on five hits and three errors. The Falcons left eight base runners stranded, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth.
Woodruff scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 11-2. Ashlea Hunter drove in Register before Osborne hit a sacrifice fly to score Hunter. Downey also scored in the inning.
Osborne was 2-for-2 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead Woodruff. Register, Hunter and Fowler each had two hits.
“I felt great tonight,” Osborne said. “I thought we pulled together as a team. We did this for the seniors.”
Eliza Long allowed nine hits and four earned runs in the complete game victory.
“It felt really great to start out with a bang in the first inning,” Long said. “We brought it together really well as a team.”
Sydney Stokes and Emily Sandlin each had RBI singles in the seventh for A.C. Flora. Taylor Smith, Catherine Floyd and Stokes scored in the inning. Maggie Taylor was 3-for-4.
“Mental errors have kind of been our nemesis a little bit this year,” A.C. Flora coach April Farr said. “We are a team that can battle and can hit once we get going, but that hurt us in the first inning.
