Summerville ended Dutch Forks softball season with a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday in the District 8 championship round.
The Green Wave (23-7) beat the Silver Foxes 1-0 in the opener and followed with a 4-3 win in the nightcap to earn a spot in the Class 4A Lower State tournament. Dutch Fork closed the book on a 20-10 campaign.
DFs bats went silent at precisely the wrong time. The Silver Foxes scored just seven runs in their final five games and tallied only three runs in regulation play during their four-game playoff stay. Dutch Fork was a 1-0 winner over Lugoff-Elgin in the first round, and needed a three-run home run by Cassidy Piccirillo in the ninth inning to beat Summerville in the semifinals.
The Foxes managed only four hits in Wednesdays opener against Green Wave left-hander Taylor Wuerfel, and had just one hit and no runs in the final four innings of the decisive second game.
Summerville produced the lone run in the first game in the sixth inning. Sarah Windham led off with a single to right field, made it to second on a sacrifice bunt by Summer Jenkins and raced home on a double down the left-field line by Taylor Belfiore.
Dutch Fork had two runners on base in three different innings against Windham, but could not deliver in the clutch. The Silvers Foxes had a runner tagged out at the plate for the final out of the third inning.
The Silver Foxes built a 3-1 lead though three innings in the second game, but had just one more hit the rest of the way against Jenkins and Windham.
DFs best offensive inning of the night came in the first inning in the nightcap against Windham, leading the bases with one out on singles by Madi Brown and Hayley Elkins and a walk to Piccirillo. Brown scored on a single by Meghan Murphy and Elkins crossed on a sacrifice fly off the bat of her sister, Jenna.
The Silver Foxes upped the lead to 3-1 in the third against Jenkins, who replaced Windham in the circle in the second. Hayley Elkins rounded the bases on a triple to right field followed by a throwing error on the relay.
But the Green Wave responded to tie it up with two unearned runs in the fourth against Jenna Elkins and pushed across what proved to be the championship run in the sixth against Hayley Elkins on a two-run RBI single by Belfiore.
