Richland booms are just the National Guard

— Any loud booms you hear Thursday in southeastern Richland County, in particular around the Eastover area, are the National Guard conducting demolition training.

Training will be held Thursday and Friday, said Guard spokesperson Maj. Cindi King.

“Especially since after what happened in Boston, we want to make sure when we do training like this, we notify the public in advance,” King said.

The explosions will take place at McCrady Training Center, a large parcel of land connected to Ft. Jackson. It is at the far eastern end of Leesburg Road.

Thursday’s forecast of cloudy skies may make the booms even louder than they otherwise would be, she said. A low cloud cover makes the sound bounce off and return to earth.
