Chapin begins quest for fourth tennis title

Chapin begins its run at a fourth straight Class 3A boys tennis championship on Thursday with a first-round home date against Greenville, weather permitting.

The Eagles, who are led by six-year seniors Sean Koch, Jeffrey Koch, Augie Kibler and Zac Murray, went 15-3 during the regular season, losing only to neighboring Irmo (twice) and defending 2A state champion Waccamaw.

“We’ve had another good season so far despite losing three starters off last year’s team,” said coach John Rodgers. “We’ll try to make another run at a state title.”

Sean Koch is 15-3 at No. 1 singles and Jeffrey Koch is 14-4 at No. 2. Kibler (15-3) and Murray (16-2) at next in the order at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Murray was a double starter a year ago. He other new face in the singles lineup is junior Michael Berk (9-1 at No. 5).

Junior Patrick Knight and eighth-grader Jason Flowers are 14-2 at No. 2 doubles.
