Its safe to say that Wednesday, May 1 will not be a day fondly remembered by Midlands softball fans.
Six area teams went into action in the state playoffs and all six lost to end seasons on a bitter note.
Spring Valley and Chapin were blown out on the road. Spring Valley (20-9) fell 9-0 to Boiling Spring in the Class 4A District 2 championship round. Chapin (20-4) was expelled from the Class 3A District 4 playoffs by Palmetto, 7-2.
Taylor Crawford and Walhalla eliminated Camden from the 3A District 3 playoffs. The Razorbacks long drive was made a bit easier to take by a 5-0 win. It was another stellar outing in the circle by Lander-bound Crawford who fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts, duplicating her performance on Tuesday in a 4-0 win over Travelers Rest in another elimination game.
Dutch Fork, Blythewood and Lexington went down in excruciating fashion.
Dutch Fork (20-10) dropped 1-0 and 4-3 decisions to Summerville to let the 4A District 8 championship slip away. The Sliver Foxes bats went dead over down the stretch. DF produced just seven runs in its last five games and managed to score just four runs during 28 regulation innings in four playoff outings.
Blythewood (25-5) had to beat Byrnes twice to win the District 4 title, and had the prize in its grasp only to let it slip away. The Bengals beat the host Rebels 5-1 in the first game, and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap with Jessica Roth belting a three-run home run. Blythewood had a 5-1 lead with two outs in the seventh inning, but could not seal the deal. With their backs to the wall, the Rebels produced big time with a two-run double, a two-run homer, a walk and a game-winning triple.
Lexington (18-10) out-hit Wando 11-5 but suffered a 5-4 loss to the host Warriors in the 4A District 7 title game. The Wildcats left 10 runners on base and had four errors in the field.
White Knoll and Gilbert are the only area softball teams still active. White Knoll (21-6) hosts Ashley Ridge in the 4A District 5 title round on Thursday. Gilbert (18-10) hosts Georgetown in the 3A District 5 championship round on Friday.
White Knoll beat AR 11-8 in the semifinals, and Gilbert was a 6-3 semifinal winner against Georgetown.
