The White Knoll Timberwolves secured the Class 4A District 5 softball title on Thursday at home by defeating Ashley Ridge 5-0 in the second game of a double-header.
Coming out of the elimination bracket, Ashley Ridge had posted a 6-4 win in the first game to put pressure on the Timberwolves.
“I didn’t think we were as focused in the first game as we could have been, but obviously we got the wake-up call,” coach David Smith said.
White Knoll got an early jump in the finale.
Caroline Bowen hit a lead-off double and scored on Kelsey Campbell’s single to give White Knoll a 1-0 lead after one inning. The Timberwolves cemented their offensive dominance in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs on five hits, with doubles from Christina Gartman, Bowen and Megan Anderson.
The Timberwolves had found their bats too late in the first game.
“That last inning of the first game, we had some good at-bats, and that did carry over,” Smith said.
After giving up three runs in the first inning and facing a two run deficit most of the game, the Timberwolves saw the game slip further away in the top of the seventh.
Two White Knoll errors helped Ashley Ridge put three more runs across to go up 6-1.
The Timberwolves rallied in their final inning. They posted five hits — more than they had in the rest of the game — with Lydia Trexler, Campbell and Morgan Holmes batting in runs. But Ashley Ridge picked up the two needed outs to leave the bases loaded and keep its chances alive.
White Knoll senior pitcher Savannah Terrapin stayed on the mound for all 14 innings, striking out seven.
“It was an amazing feeling,” Terrapin said. “We were all so pumped and energized. I really had the drive to win, because I don’t want to be playing my last game any time soon.”
Smith said, “I felt like she just got stronger as the day went on.”
The Timberwolves will play host to Bluffton on Saturday in the first round of the Lower State tournament.
