Friday letters: Poor people aren’t all moochers

May 3, 2013

Modern society and government practically define being poor as a curse. Some do make it a choice, but not all do. Many poor people are retired, old and sick and have worked many years. Many are victims of bad health, job loss or other bad fortune.

They are not baby-producing, nonworking freeloaders taking advantage of the system. They pay the same as others for everything they get. If they own anything, the system denies them help. They are punished for managing to attain a little something. What does the future hold for these people? Will this society leave them to die or starve? Will bad health, old age and hard times be a death sentence?
