Sunday letters: Leaders must expand Medicaid

May 5, 2013

— Our Republican legislators should take the lead to expand Medicaid, the government-run health insurance program. Our Gov. Nikki Haley should do the same. This is a moral issue.

On a daily basis, I thank my God for our faith community workers here in Kershaw County, who work to serve the poor families and the most vulnerable. But we cannot do it alone. There is no moral basis for catering to special interests while harming the poor. In fact, my faith tells me that it is our calling to care for “the least of these” first. Otherwise, who pays? We pay.

The concerned citizens of South Carolina should send a message to Republican lawmakers and Gov. Haley, who do not support federal Medicaid expansion, by replacing them in the next election.
