Monday letters: Beware the ‘evil government’

May 6, 2013

One argument used to justify the ability to buy and possess assault weapons is that they are necessary to repel encroachments of our liberty by an “evil government.” I question the effectiveness of an AK-47 against a modern fighter aircraft, but putting this detail aside, many of these same people are quite willing to grant this “evil government” the ability to declare a citizen an “enemy combatant” to deny him the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Could not an “evil government” declare an anti-social act to be that of an “enemy combatant,” and couldn’t all of us be denied constitutional rights?
