COLUMBIA, SC — Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin may formally announce his re-election bid in the upcoming November election Monday morning.
“Major political announcement coming on Monday morning. Stay tuned...,” Benjamin posted without elaboration on his Facebook page Friday.
Since then, some have speculated that Benjamin’s announcement will likely be about himself — that he will, as widely believed, seek another four-year term as mayor on the seven-person city council.
Benjamin could not be reached for comment.
Benjamin will be a latecomer to the race. Already, city council member Moe Baddourah, a restaurateur, and Larry Sypolt, a former FBI analyst, have announced for mayor.
Benjamin’s tenure as mayor, which began in June 2010, has been marked by ups and downs. The downs included questions raised over his push to give a relatively inexperienced new city manager, Teresa Wilson, a $190,000 yearly salary. The ups have included his being a visible cheerleader for the city and his various youth-oriented initiatives.
