Lexington council puts aid to some regional groups on hold

— Lexington County Council put on hold Tuesday a series of contributions to a half dozen groups that promote economic development and other regional projects.

The delay in committing up to $50,000 apiece to groups like the River Alliance and Central Carolina Economic Development Alliance came as the nine council members wrangled over a spending plan for the year starting July 1.

Some council members are frustrated at the indecision. “We’re either going to be a player or not,” councilman Johnny Jeffcoat said.

The postponement came after some council members say it’s needed to get a better idea if the subsidies contribute to the possibility of a tax hike they don’t favor.
