Bicycle-friendly mayor of Memphis wheeling into Columbia forum

This week of National Bike Month includes a bike-to-work day and a forum featuring Memphis Mayor AC Wharton, who is credited with reversing his city’s reputation among cyclists from worst to most improved.

Wharton is among the speakers Thursday during a forum at the Big Apple, 1000 Hampton St. He led his city’s efforts to transform the commitment in Memphis to bike and pedestrian infrastructure. The forum runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Columbia’s bike and pedestrian master plan is to be announced at the forum.

Among other events:

• Bike to work day is set for Friday, with enthusiasts gathering at the State House steps for a ride down Main Street.

• Biking instructions will be offered Saturday from 9-11:30 a.m. at Soda City Market on Main Street. Certified instructors will discuss bike tune-ups to safety tips to riding skills.
