Florida State baseball beats Clemson to clinch ACC Atlantic division

From Staff ReportsMay 19, 2013

— Sophomore left-handers Brandon Leibrandt and Billy Strode scattered 13 hits and continually pitched out of dangers as No. 9 Florida State clinched the ACC Atlantic division crown with a 6-1 victory against Clemson at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday.

The Seminoles (44-11, 20-10 ACC) won the series 2-1 after losing the opener, their first series victory over Clemson since 2009.

The Tigers (39-17, 18-12) scored a run in the first inning and put 16 batters on base. However, Clemson could not come up with a clutch hit after the first inning and left 13 runners on base, including 10 in scoring position. Clemson left the bases loaded in the fourth off Leibrandt, loaded them again in the sixth and left two more on in the second and ninth innings.

Leibrandt (9-4) held Clemson to one run on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings.

Strode pitched out of the bases-loaded jam in the sixth and earned his first career save by tossing four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jose Brizuela led off with a bloop single before Giovanny Alfonzo was hit by a pitch. After both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt, Seth Miller belted a 1-2 pitch up the middle to give the Seminoles a 5-1 lead and put the game out of reach.

Clemson starter Zack Erwin (5-1) allowed three runs on six hits and one walk in two innings.

Jon McGibbon had a game-high three hits to lead the Tigers.

Clemson finished in third place in the Atlantic and fifth overall in the ACC standings. The Tigers will be the No. 5 seed in the ACC tournament in Durham, N.C. starting Wednesday. The Tigers will play one game each against No. 4-seeded N.C. State, top-seeded North Carolina and eighth-seeded Miami. The Tigers’ tourney schedule will be announced Sunday morning.
