Scattered heavy rains strike Midlands

May 19, 2013

The clouds sat a few areas in the Midlands Sunday night, pumping massive doses of rain in short periods. Meanwhile, rain gauges nearby barely were wet.

The rain totals reported by volunteers in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Sleet Network show 3.63 and 3.47 inches in two spots in the Oak Grove area of Lexington County. The nearest gauges to the west of those two, just a few miles away, had 0.30, 0.11, 0.05 and 0.01 inches.

The official rainfall at Columbia Metropolitan Airport was 0.76. Other Midlands locations hit with the heaviest rains included Northeast Columbia (3.47), Dalzell (2.77), Sumter (2.29) and Elgin (2.20).
