Thursday letters: Camden Military firm but caring

May 23, 2013

As a frequent visitor to Camden Military, I was shocked by The State’s May 13 article, “Parents say Camden Military cadet was raped as trial nears.” I feel for the young man in the article. Evidently, he was miserable in the military environment and suffered horribly if his parents’ statements are true.

However, the Camden Military Academy that the parents describe and that John Monk portrayed in his article are vastly different from the Camden Military Academy I observed on my visits.

I have spoken to the entire cadet assembly in chapel on several Sunday mornings. I have attended football games and eaten in the cafeteria.

The students were polite and well-behaved and paid attention. I witnessed the staff interacting with the students. They appeared to be firm but caring. They promoted self-discipline and student leadership.

I was impressed enough to refer parents to Camden Military.
