Hammond’s Seventh Woods makes the cut for USA U16 basketball team

After three rounds of cuts, rising Hammond sophomore Seventh Woods has been named to the USA Men’s Basketball U16 team.

Woods, in Colorado Springs for a three-day training, survived a cut from 16 finalists to make the 12-player roster, which includes Devearl Ramsey of Los Angeles’ Sierra Canyon High, and St. Vincent-St. Mary’s V.J. King.

“It’s not only an honor to make this team but it was an honor for being hand-picked by the USA staff and coaches, to wear USA across my chest,” Woods said.

“Being the youngest here just makes it that much more (of an honor),” the 14-year-old Woods said. “This is by far the best learning experience that a young basketball (player) could have.”

The team will be coached Iowa City’s Don Showalter. “We have depth. We have talented shooters. We have really, really big players inside. We’re very versatile, so I feel good about the makeup of our team,” the coach said.

The 6-foot-2 Woods is one of six guards selected to the team.

With the Skyhawks last season, Woods averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 assists and 2.7 steals in the 2012-13 season.

He will remain in Colorado with the U.S. team, training this week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Next week, the team will travel to Uruguay for the June 11-15 FIBA Americas U16 tournament.

Woods is the second Columbia athlete to be selected to compete with a USA basketball team this summer. Heathwood Hall’s Aja Wilson was named to the USA Women’s basketball U19 team in May, and will compete in Lithuania in July.
