SCHOOLS

WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT KYLA BURWICK has won the top prize at the state level National History Day contest.

DOBY’S MILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL has been named one of 35 schools across the U.S. to be named a 2013 national School of Character finalist.

LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR JERRY GATCH has been inducted into the S.C. Band Directors Association’s Hall of Fame.

THE LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ECONOMICS AND FINANCE CHALLENGE TEAMS have won at the S.C. State Economics and Finance Challenge at the Darla Moore School of Business.

COMMUNITY

BRIAN BOROUGH has been promoted to the rank of master deputy by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

YOUTH

THREE SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS have earned 2013 College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The students are Erika Arvay, Jonathan Boland and Daniel Clements.

CODY DENNIS, a student at Camden Military Academy, served as his senior class valedictorian and received the James F. Fisher Award for having the highest grade point average.

PELION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Ashley D. Bailey and Rebekah Treaster have been chosen to represent the school at Palmetto Girls State, and Aubrey Hite and Colton Poole have been chosen to represent the school at Palmetto Boys State.

RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ALEXIA JUNKER has been awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship. She will head to China this summer to study the language and served as a citizen diplomat for the U.S. State Department.

MILITARY

AIR FORCE AIRMAN DALVIN J. CASH has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Tanya Cash-Sutton and David Sutton, both of Columbia.

MARINE CORPS PFC. CHRISTOPHER R. THREATT has graduated from U.S. Marine recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is the son of Dara B. and Chris A. Threatt of West Columbia.

MARINE CORPS PFC. LUKE A. TERRY has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is the son of Elizabeth and James Terry of Elgin.

NAVY SEAMAN RASHAWN D. CARROLL has graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Sabrina Y. Gibbs of Columbia.

CIVILIAN ROBERT H. FRAME has enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, N.C. He is a 2013 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School.

CIVILIAN ERIC S. CHRISTIAN has enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, N.C. He is the son of Shante D. and Eric S. Christian of Columbia.

CIVILIAN EBONI J. LIPSCOMB have enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Raleigh, N.C. She is the daughter of Cynthia E. Sandle of Columbia.
