SC unemployment rate holds at 8%

— South Carolina’s unemployment rate remained at 8 percent in May, according to federal data released Friday.

The jobless rate had fallen the three previous months and is down from a high of 11.9 percent in November 2009.

Employment rose for an 11th consecutive month, but the labor force -- those working or looking for work fell for a third straight month.

The U.S. unemployment rate stands at 7.6 percent.

South Carolina saw job growth in hiring of temporary help and tourism-related workers between April and May, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce. Employment dropped in manufacturing and government jobs with the end of the school year.
